What is Round the Island Race?

The Round the Island Race is one of the most well-known and largest mass participation yacht races in the world with upwards of 1117 yachts (latest figure on 21st June) registered to compete on the 50 nautical mile course in 2022.

The event has been an annual spectacle organised by The Island Sailing Club since 1931. It began as the idea of member Major Cyril Windeler, who thought that a handicap race circumnavigating the Isle of Wight, but against the grain of the time, allowing all sizes of sailing yacht to compete together would be good.  The race rapidly grew in popularity from humble beginnings with 25 yachts competing to regularly seeing huge fleets of over 1300 boats pitting themselves against each other.  It has been run every year since World War II with the exception of 2020 when COVID was running rampant.

Known as the race for all, it has lived up to its name over the years with entries from all manner of classes including the largest ocean-racing Multihulls, Open 60s, Class 40s and a hugely diverse IRC fleet, through to Gaffers and Nordic Folkboats.  Families and first time racers go head to head against world famous professional sailors for one of the over 200 prizes awarded each year.

To help those who thinking about competing in the race for the first time, or who are new to yacht racing, our very own Paul Knox-Johnston chatted with owner and skipper of ‘Haven KJ Enigma’ about his top racing tips.  Covering the hints and tips on subjects such as preparing your yacht for racing, how to get into racing, the racing rules you need to follow keeping your crew happy and safety whilst racing, it is the perfect intro for anyone with a competitive streak looking to move on from just cruising.
